President's Corner 2006

December 2006

2007 is almost here and this is my last Presidents Corner! Jerry Murphy is your new president and he will be taking over this column. I have enjoyed my two years as president, but it is time to move on! (Besides, I am running out of things to say!)

The Fantasy Lights cruise was fun as always. I don't have the exact count, but we had around 15 to 20 cars. It was cool meeting some new people as some from Mustangs West joined us. One thing I know is that having to use the clutch during the cruise isn't ideal as we try to go a slow as possible.

Our holiday dinner was also great. We presented our donation to Willie and Sally Carson of Sweet Willies Family Support and they were again very grateful. They are more grateful this year than in past years as they had most of their toys to give out stolen from their storage. How much lower can someone go these days?

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great 2006 and have an even better 2007! We are looking forward to working with Korum's new General Manager, Sebastian Finocchiaro in making it a great year. Passing the baton off to Jerry!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

November 2006

We had our election and the results are in--congratulations to Jerry Murphy! He will be your president in 2007. I will still be on the board so I will be working with Jerry and the rest of those elected in the coming year.

2007 should be a great year as Korum now has a new general manager that has already showed great interest in our club. His name is Sebastian Finocchiaro. Mr. Finocchiaro stopped by our board meeting and again at our club meeting to discuss how we can grow our relationship with each other. There are some budding discussions about Korum sponsored events that will involve showing some of our cars. There will be more info in the coming months. Bottom line is, Mr. Finocchiaro is committed to customer service and sincerely looks forward to ways we can help each other promote our favorite automobile--the Mustang!

Remember, there is no club meeting in December. See a lot of you at the Holiday Dinner!

October 2006

Elections will be held at our November 21st meeting.  I cannot stress this enough—PLEASE, PLEASE, if you would like to make a difference in your club, please someone step up and take a nomination for president!  One thing is for certain: I will NOT be running for president for a third straight year (I will however be taking over as the webmatster for Tom Alpert.)  We currently have NO nominations for president!  I would hate to see the club go without a president!  Our current nominations are for: Vice President: Bryan Zimbelman (incumbent,) Treasurer: Nancy Freeman (incumbent,) Secretary: Paul Nee (incumbent,) (see a trend here…), Board Members: Lance Smith, Maryanne Hymer, Bob Reinert, and Matt Adams.  A ballot will be provided at the club meeting.  Please email me at fordmandan@yahoo.com or call me at 840-6153 if you would like to make a nomination (you can nominate yourself!!)

We will be doing a cruise December 2nd to the “Fantasy Lights” in Spanaway.  The current plan is to meet at the Spanaway Godfather’s at 5pm for dinner and then go over to the park afterward.  Monika Kirkland is putting this together and details will be posted on the website when available and at the November meeting/newsletter.  Thanks Monika!

We are starting the “Mustang of the Month” back up and we are starting off with Charity Ridgley's awesome ’05 GT!  Congratulation Charity!  (See the main web page.) The previous MOTM winner has the option of making the selection for the next month’s MOTM otherwise the board will be picking a club member’s car at the board meetings.  It will then be announce at the next club meeting. (December MOTM will be announced at our annual dinner as there is no club meeting in December.)

Also, we have proposed a day for our 2007 All Ford and Mustang Roundup—Saturday, August 11th.  We decided we would like make it on the 2nd Saturday in August as to not be on the same weekend as the Bowen Scraff show and Saturday works better for most people.  An official vote will be made at the November meeting.

Have a safe Halloween!

September 2006

We have turned the page onto fall and the car show season is nearly behind us.  I hope everyone had a chance to take in your favorite events of the summer.

This is also the time of year to start thinking about board nominations for the October meeting!  We will then put together the ballot for the election at the November meeting (to be posted in the October newsletter.)  Please get involved with your club and nominate yourself!  You can make a difference on how we go about making the club a better experience for all.  Positions are: president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, and two elected board members.

We had a nice turnout for our annual club picnic.  We even brought in some new members to the club who found out about the picnic and wanted to stop by to check it out.  One couple found out about it from our website (and even brought a beautiful cake with the club logo on it!) and another couple stopped by when they saw our cars at the park.  Welcome to the club!  This year Paul Nee took home the prizes for BOTH the blind-man obstacle course and the slow drags.  Way to go Paul!

Make sure to keep Friday December 8th open for our annual dinner!  It will again be held at Lakewold Garden’s and was a fabulous venue last year.  See the flyer in this newsletter.

I also want to give best wishes to long time club members Pat and Gary Weaver as they move to Las Vegas.  You will be missed!!

I hope to see everyone at the next club meeting on October 17th with your board nominations!

August 2006

Hello once again,

Our annual car show is now behind us and it was a great time!  There was a lot of hard work put in and when coordinating 100+ cars with the fairly limited resources that we have, I would say it went pretty smoothly.  That doesn’t mean that it was without its issues…but I won’t go into those here.  Thanks again to all of those showed their cars, the club members that volunteered, all of our sponsors, Willie and Sally of Sweet Willies Family Support for coming out, and to the South Hill Mall for the use of their parking lot.

July 2006
Hello all,

Are we having fun in the Sun?? In July, I myself did the Vintage Races on the Friday and Sunday, Fugate Ford's anniversary event (rode in the monster truck "American Thunder,") did the Pony Trails, and the Mustang Roundup. I didn't make it to any of the other many things going on in the busy month of July.

This years Pony Trails took us to Mud Mountain Dam. Though the trek there was on the short side this time, it was fun still the same. After grabbing a bite to eat and looking around at the couple hundred cars there, a few club members took off from the park at the same time and I left moments later. I decided to take a little chance on a shortcut back to highway 410 I remembered from years ago. It all came back to me on how easy it was to find my way back to the highway near Buckley--the "other route" went out of the way back through Enumclaw. I thought about stopping on the side the road and wait for them when I saw some other Mustangers I knew at Wally’s Drive Inn as I passed by. I decided to turn around to join them for a while and as I was going the other way, I saw the group that left before me. They were all confused on how I could not only beat them to that point, but to be going toward them from totally the opposite direction!

And about the Roundup--we had around 12 cars there. Congratulations to the six that took home trophies from the biggest show of the year!!

My next president's corner will be immediately after our annual show. Please try to make the August meeting on the 15th so we can coordinate a few last things.

June 2006

Hello Again

As you may know, the Ford Motor Company has decided to “protect its trademarks” and is actively going after all businesses with “Mustang”, “Stang”, “Cobra” (and others) in their names and is looking for $100,000 in damages for each case.  If this is fully carried out, this will affect all the great businesses that we have come to know as Mustang owners.  Mustangs Plus, Mustangs Unlimited, Mustang Depot—even our locally owned Mustang Ranch would be affected—just to name few.  I am looking for ways on how we can make ourselves be heard by Ford that this is an extremely bad PR move on their part and would be more damaging than profitable.  But these are the good times to be Mustang owners, right??  At least they can’t take our cars away!!

The Vintage Races may be under way or over by the time you read this.  If not, we will be leaving the South Hill Krispy Kreme at 8:30am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (June 30th, July 1-2.)

Pony Trails will be on Friday July 14th and they want us up there by 8:00am and will be leaving at 9:00am.  We should probably leave the South Hill Krispy Kreme no later than 6:30am to allow for traffic.  Not sure yet if my car will be running good enough yet to make the run, but we shall see.

If you are planning on going to the Bellevue judged show on July 15th, you are on your own.  As for the Sunday, July 16th peoples choice show, we will be meeting at the Poodle Dog in Fife at 6:30am for breakfast and then heading out around 7:15 or 7:30 to cruise on up.

Our annual dinner is set!  It will be on December 8th 6:00~9:00pm at Lakewold Gardens (same location as last year.)  I initially stated 6:30~9:30 (as quoted in the minutes) but the time was changed to accommodate the gardens schedule.

See you at the July 18th club meeting and hopefully will have some good stories to tell about the busy month of July.

May 2006
Hello All!

I need to pass along a couple notices before our next club meeting:

Saturday, June 3rd we are meeting at Griot’s Garage in Fife (the corner of 20th St. and Industry Dr.—just off I-5 Exit 136) for a little auto detailing tech session to show off their products. We will be joining a local Ford truck club, so it will be interesting to mix with them. I would like to limit this to club members only. We do not want to overwhelm the truck club as this was originally their event and they were nice enough to let us join them. We will look into maybe another session in the future. At the moment, there are no plans to cruise up there together. The start time is 11 am and goes until 1 pm. Maybe we will cruise somewhere afterwards for lunch?

Vintage races June 30th - July 2nd. This club invitation only event needs a head count prior to our June 20th meeting. Cost per person is $25 for one day, or $40 for 2-3 days. You must pick which days you wish to attend and payment must be collected at/by our June 20th meeting or mailed to the club address. This is an outstanding event that you won’t want to miss! Club “parade laps” are on Saturday and Sunday. If you are not a club member, this perk alone is worth the membership! (Shameless club plug I know!) Please call Tim Gwynn at (253) 752-4588 for more information.

See you at the June 20th club meeting!

April 2006
What great timing! All of that rain in the month of April and it holds off for the 1st Annual Daffodil Festival Mustang Show. We all know who to thank for that! And thank you Paul for your hard work in coordination and representing our club—not bad for flying by the seat of your pants for a new event. Thanks to all the committee members and the Harmon for hosting the awards with the beautiful Miss Pierce County and Miss Washington presenting!! I think it is safe to say that those that participated will be looking forward to doing it again next year!

Coming up is the Lakewold Gardens Mustang “display” where 10 or so of us (room is limited) will be displaying our cars on Saturday, May 6th. This is a display only on our part and is part of the bigger week long “May Fest” that they hold. It all begins at 10 AM—though those participating will need to be there by no later than 9 AM to get setup. For those that don’t know, this is in exchange for the use of their conference room for our annual dinner. Contact me if you need more info. Come and check out the gardens in the spring time and support your club members!

See you all at the next club meeting Tuesday, May 16th!!

March 2006

Spring is here and we had another great turn out for our Poker Cruise with about 30 cars.  We cruised from the South Hill Mall, down to Orting, through Eatonville, back through Graham, and then stopping at the Spanaway God Fathers for lunch.  Tom A. was the big winner with a queen high diamonds straight flush (with wild card) and second went to W.C. with four 4’s.  But we all were winners in having a great time!!  A big “thank you” goes to Pete and Nancy for putting it all together.  And thank you Mother Nature for a mostly dry cruise.

Due to a series of events, we will not be having our show at Bradley Lake Park after all.  We felt that it was in the best interest of the club, our participants, and our spectators for the move back to the South Hill Mall.  Items that steered us away:

  • Parking restricted to a confined area between the parking lot and the lake
  • Parking area has many spots that could become muddy in the slightest rain
  • Terrain not necessarily the best for parking cars in some areas
  • Parking area next to the lake would be significantly covered in goose droppings
  • There was concern over children on bicycles getting to close to the cars

Though the mall is seen by many as a “sterile” environment, it does provide us with some more flexibility in the layout and the number of cars we can hold.  This year we are going to be asking the mall if we can have vendors come in.  Some of the food court vendors may have something setup as well as Krispy Kreme having a trailer setup.

Remember the Daffodil Parade is April 22nd.

February 2006

Hello all,

Well, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and thus winter will be over soon! (Side note: the fact that the Ground Hog’s day tradition started near Pittsburgh and was right before the Super Bowl just adds to my conspiracy theory…hmm...) Spring is almost here—my unofficial start to the cruising season! Though I didn’t make the Sweet Heart Cruise, we had 17 cars and over 2 dozen people! Thank you Tom and Dori for putting that on. Next cruise: March 25th – Five Card Draw Poker Cruise.

We have an update on the car show venue. The location is staying the same as discussed (Bradley Park) but the parking arrangements have changed. We have been asked to park near the main parking lot in the area going toward the lake. It will be tight, but we feel like it will still be a great upgrade for the mall parking lot. We need to gear up and get sponsors for the car show. Please let me know if you need a sponsorship packet. We still need some show committee chairs filled. The chairs we are looking for: Sponsor Solicitation, Raffle, Poker Walk, PA System, Health and Safety, Setup, Volunteer Appreciation, and Vendors. Your help makes our show run as smoothly as possible!!

January 2006
Hello all Mustang fans!

I am happy to returning as president of club for 2006 and I am looking forward to another good year. Some of the things on the calendar of note for the next few months:

  • February 11th , Sweetheart Cruise (see flyer insert for info)
  • March (date TBA), Poker Run
  • April 22nd, Daffodil Parade
  • May 6th, May Fest at Lakewold Gardens

I want to get the Daffodil Parade and May Fest on everyone’s collective minds to so we can have great participation:

For the Daffodil Parade this year, the parade committee is looking for as many as 125 to 200 Mustangs, Cobras, Cougars, etc. and will be the car of choice from local car clubs. Specifically, they are looking for about 75 cars to be put on static display in Tacoma along the parade route, about 10 “choice” cars for the beginning of the parade, and the rest of cars will be needed to bring up the end of the parade. For more info, contact Paul Nee at (253) 640-9943.

May Fest is put on by Lakewold Gardens near Gravely Lake in Lakewood. They are looking for around a dozen or so 1965 to 1973 (newer may be considered) Mustangs or Cougars for one day (Saturday May 6th) of their week long flower and plant sale. Showing our cars is in exchange for the use of their conference room for our holiday dinner in December. And from the response I got from our past dinner, we will want to make this a great event for them!! For more information, please contact me at (253) 840-6153.

And one final thing I wanted to say: The Seahawks are NFC Champions and going to the Super Bowl!!! Is it any coincidence that it will be at “Ford Field” ??

GO SEAHAWKS!!
